Postcards from Bergen

Sunshine welcomed us to Bergen….it has been some time since our last visit and you can say that it has grown but also appears little changed.   New development covers the slopes that surround the town but all seems to have been done with style and consideration.

What hasn’t changed much is the Harbour , old town and of course the Hanseatic quarter.  It is in this Hanseatic area of wooden houses where Traders both lived and conducted their  business much of course with Maritime connections. Destroyed by fire on many occasions but with Norwegian persistence always rebuilt.

Today together with the Fish Market it is the draw for tourists…the only noticeable change is the designers gift shops, pubs and of course the ubiquitous McDonalds.

The best views are from the top of Mount Floien which we reached by way of the spectacular and packed funicular railway ….but the views from the top are more than worth it.

Today it was extra special as Fred Olsen Lines had all 4 of its cruise fleet Balmoral, Boudicca, Black Watch and our boat Braemar, in the port on the same day (the first time ever).  So here are a few postcard shots to hopefully re-create for you the summer spirit of Bergen…

Bergen did both us and Fred Olsen proud….wonderful weather and a fantastic water canon send off as all 4 ships sailed off in flotilla…all bound for different and exciting destination but may  be none as exciting as Bergen’s welcome and farewell

Next up…..Fjords, Mountains and Waterfalls.

Then the bustle of Stavanger
