Sunday…So Off to Church

Holy Cross Church, Ilam, Staffordshire

The village is hardly big enough to host a Church but Ilam has been home to the Church of the Holy Cross since Saxon times.  It is a striking building with a Saddleback roof to the tower and whilst there have been restorations and extensions in the 17th and 19th centuries there is still much of the old building still existing.

One claim to fame is that it is also where the remains of Saint Bertram the 8th century Mercian King are buried.

Nestling below Bunkers Hill and Dove Dale, Ilam is just a stones throw from the Derbyshire border but possessively and rightly claimed by Staffordshire.

Well worth a visit.

    • If you look at the interior wall on the right you can see a mural, it runs right round the church. It was created by the children of the small local school and illustrates the history of church and village
