The Walled Gardens of Calke Abbey, Derbyshire
Saturday dawned with clear skies and lots of blistering sunshine, after this weeks rains it was a very welcome change. Saturday was also the 1st of July, a new month and yes, more than half way through the year.
Being a perfect summers day we headed off to enjoy and explore the Walled Gardens of Calke Abbey. Located in the grounds of this once important family home, the gardens form just one part of what was a very productive estate…..perhaps as near totally self sufficient as one could get.
So join us on a brief tour of the Walled Gardens. They are split into distinct parts. One formal floral layouts…layouts of bedding plants set out today in exactly the same designs that have been planted for well over 100 years. The second part of the garden is the ‘working’ garden. Vegetables and fruit, glass houses, Orangery, Bee Hives and of course the Potting Sheds. So here is a quick view to wet your appetite….
Onto the ‘Working Garden’

There is so much more about this Estate, so next Sunday we will take you on a tour of more of the buildings and surrounds…and as it is a Sunday will also take you to the Calke Family Church.
But now its time to relax a while and reflect…
